How to Play the Leg Glance
The leg glance is where the batsmen ‘flicks’ the ball from the stumps or the off-side, onto the leg side of the field. This shot is hard to play but with practice, it can become quite an easy shot to play. This shot isn’t a powerful shot; however it is used as a run scoring shot. Generally the shot is used to turn the strike over, getting the singles. But it can also be used to score boundaries or two’s as well. There are two ways to play the leg glance. You can either play it from the front foot or the back foot.
The front foot leg glance is played like a drive. This is usually played when the ball is pitched up reasonably full, hitting on the half volley. The other alternative is playing a back foot leg glance. This shot is played from the back foot, on or just slightly behind the crease.
The first step to playing a leg glance is to position the body behind the ball. For a full pitch ball, you stride out towards the pitch of the ball, like you would to play a drive. The head and the weight should be over the front leg, with eyes carefully watching the ball. For a short pitched delivery, the feet should step back and across the off-stump. The body should be positioned right behind the line of the ball. The head should be behind the line of the ball with eyes watching the ball, all the way onto the bat.
The front foot leg glance is played similar to a drive. The bat swings through facing the line of the ball. It is important to keep a high elbow through-out the shot. The ball should be played directly under the eyes. The batsmen’s grip should have a strong top hand, with a relaxed bottom hand. The difference is when the ball strikes the cricket bat. Upon impact of the cricket ball, the bat needs to turn so that the angle once impacted on the bat is towards the leg side. This is achieved by flicking or rolling the wrists over.
The back foot leg glance is played like a back foot block shot, with the body positioned behind the ball. The difference is upon impact; the bat needs to be angled towards the leg side. This is done by the same way the front foot leg glance is played, with the wrists flicking or rolling over.
The front foot drive is more of a run scoring shot, where as the back foot leg glance is used to turn the strike over, picking up singles. These shots use the pace off the bowler’s delivery, rather than creating power yourself.

England Leave New Captain Out of Squad
England has left new captain Andrew Strauss out if their provisional squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in June.
Strauss, who uses a Gray Nicholls Powerbow cricket bats, feels that his game is now suited to the crash-bang-wallop format of the Twenty20 game so he will sit out the tournament which will be staged in England in June.
England have delayed naming their captain until closer to the tournament but batsman Robert Key and all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas, who captain Kent and Hampshire respectively, are likely to be among the contenders to be skipper.
Off-spinner Shaun Udal, who turned 40 last month, was included in the 30-man squad which will eventually be cut to 15 for the tournament.
The squad includes Warwickshire's rookie seamer Chris Woakes, who was the county‘s leading wicket-taker in the County Championship last season.
Woakes, 20, was part of England's Under-19 World Cup squad last year and has never been in a senior squad before though he did impress on an ECB fast bowling camp in India during the winter.
Samit Patel who spins cricket balls very well was also included, despite recently being left out of the Twenty20 and one-day matches in the West Indies after failing to "reach acceptable standards of fitness for international cricket."
England selector Geoff Miller said: "Andrew Strauss had an outstanding tour of the West Indies during a difficult winter.
"Andrew and the selectors believe his game is better suited to Test and one-day international cricket and it is for that reason he has not been selected in the preliminary 30-man squad for the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20."Andrew who uses Gray Nicolls cricket equipment is focused on the Test and ODI format of the game despite not being included in the 30-man Twenty20 squad.
"The selectors have decided against naming a captain for the ICC World Twenty20 at this stage because we feel it is important to comprehensively review the recent tour of the Caribbean and seek input from all relevant parties including the incoming England team director who is yet to be appointed."Once these processes have been achieved the selectors will name England's Twenty20 captain in due course."
The squad contains four other players yet to be capped at international level - Joe Denly from Kent, Middlesex's Eion Morgan, Graham Napier from Essex and Yorkshire youngster Adil Rashid.

Aussie’s Taken Gamble on Brett Lee
Australia's selectors have admitted they have taken a gamble on Brett Lee's fitness by naming the fast bowler in their squad for next month's ICC World Twenty20 in England.
Lee, who uses a Woodworm cricket bats, has been named in the 15-man squad despite not playing any competitive cricket since he broke down in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa with ankle and foot injuries.
But Lee is close to regaining full fitness again and is currently in the United Arab Emirates with Australia where his recovery is being monitored by the national team's medical staff.
Lee's inclusion in the Twenty20 squad suggests that he is also likely to be named in Australia's squad for this summer's Ashes series in England. The Ashes squad is due to be named later this month along with a new list of Cricket Australia's 25 contracted players.
"We looked long and hard as to whether Brett would be available for the Twenty20 World Cup," said Australia' chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.
"That's one of the reasons why we wanted him to come to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to have a look at him, to train with the group.
"He's still going to have a fair bit of work to do before the Twenty20 World Cup starts".
"He's going to play on Thursday night but to be quite frank, we expect him to take several Twenty20 matches with cricket equipmentto get his rhythm back because he's going to be a bit rusty.
"Given the tournament is still a month away, there's no question he's going to be fit. He just needs to get some bowling into him"
"There was a lot of discussion as to whether this was the right way to bring him back into cricket or not.
"It was Brett's view and also the coaching staff that it was the right way to go not only for this tournament but also leading into the Ashes. It's a bit of a risk but we believe it's a calculated risk to go down this path.
"The Ashes squad hasn't been picked yet but we looked long and hard at getting Brett ready through the Twenty20 World Cup for the Ashes. We think it's the best way to go.
"It's not ideal. It would have been better if he had played more cricket before now. The coaching staff will set up a program for him during the Twenty20 tournament and if he is in the (Ashes) squad, he will be doing extra training outside what is required for Twenty20.
"Whoever is picked in the (Ashes) squad, the two warm-up matches before the first Test will be very important."
