Are cricket balls irreplaceable?

The game of cricket has long been associated with England, and understandably so as this is where the game originated.  Today, loads of people from all kinds of cultures enjoy the game in many different countries, and cricket has a large number of fans across the globe.  Those who play professionally pay a lot of attention to the kinds of equipment they use.  Most people know that cricket bats need to adhere to certain rules, but it is important not to forget that cricket balls are also tailored specifically to the game.

For some people, school sports are dreaded, and physical education lessons are certainly not something to look forward to.  For others, sports are a welcome break from more sedentary lessons.  Some young people enjoy a sport so much they even join lessons outside of school hours.  There isn’t a right and wrong when it comes to liking sports, though some sort of exercise can help keep a body healthy.  For those who do enjoy sports, the variety of games played in schools can be exciting.  Most schools are equipped with equipment for tennis, football, hockey and loads of other outdoor sports.  Large gyms allow indoor games as well.  Some schools either have their own swimming pool or are able to arrange transport to one nearby – swimming can be a life saving skill.

Schools are under ever increasing pressure to conform to health and safety rules, and of course the safety of children at school is paramount.  Whether someone personally believes that health and safety rules have become ridiculous, it is easy to understand why organisations are so keen to implement them.  The culture of blame and legal action is a fact of modern life.  Recently, a number of schools have banned traditional school ties amid fears they can be dangerous.  Sports are an area which can be dangerous, and cricket is no exception.  The main danger usually lies in people being hit by cricket balls.  Due to this, numerous schools in Britain have taken to using softer and lighter balls, rather than the version used in professional matches.  Using soft cricket balls is just one example of what seems to be a lack of proper cricket equipment in some schools, but also demonstrates how sports are changing for both safety and economy reasons.  Recently Tony Baldry, an MP for North Lincolnshire, in England, expressed concern about the lack of traditional cork and leather cricket balls in schools.   Ordinary balls weigh up to 163g and have a sewn seam, meaning they respond very differently to being hit than lighter, softer versions.  Mr Baldry believes that the lack of proper balls may prevent students from fully honing their skills to a professional level, or at least hamper their progress.  Although this view point has been disputed by others interested in the game, it may well be an area which requires further study.

One of the main things to realise is that schools must do their best to protect children and young people from any kind of injury.  It is likely that those students who enjoy their physical education lessons will like to play cricket no matter what sort of balls they are using.

Cricket Batting Tips to Take you to the Top

Nothing can very be more beautiful to watch on the cricket field, than to see a batsman in full flow. Even world class bowlers have admitted to being overwhelmed when they see a batsman in full swing. So we mortal beings stand no chance but become overwhelmed by a good batting display. Batting is not an easy thing to do in a cricket field, be it any condition. There are several cricket batting tips that need to be implemented properly, if a player wants to bat really well in a cricket match. The batsman must have a proper knowledge and idea about all the batting tips that he can catch hold of. The ability of a batsman is ably displayed if he knows all the cricket batting tips. The real test of the character that a batsman goes through is in the test matches, where the batsman needs to stay at the crease as long as possible.

The first and foremost batting tip, which every cricketer needs to follow is proper footwork. Footwork is the most crucial aspect of batting and a batsman must have excellent footwork to play different kinds of shot. In this modern era of fast paced Cricket, still there are lot of players who are well- known for their footwork and sound temperament. Great players like Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Brain Lara of West Indies and Ricky Ponting of Australia are renowned all over the world due to their excellent footwork and strokeplay. Apart from these players, the Indian Captain Rahul Dravid has gained the tag of "The Wall" because of his footwork combined with excellent timing. So if you are dreaming of one day becoming like any of these great players, you surely know from where to start now. Well this is just the beginning.

One of the major advantages of having a good footwork is that it allows you to time the ball very well and place the ball perfectly in the gaps. Proper footwork enables you to be in the best position to hit any ball perfectly with your cricket bat. Work really hard on your footwork if you want to perfect the art of batting and hit different types of shot. Timing of your shots also becomes perfect if you have a good and proper footwork and sound technique.

A batsman must have the ideal grip to be able to play all the strokes properly. The ideal grip on the bat must be both the hands together at the handle of the bat. Make sure that your grip is neither too loose nor too tight. The correct grip allows you to bat with flair and also does not restrict you in playing any of the shots. So take care of the grip you have and see if you need to make any correction in your existing grip. Maybe the grip is that thing which is not working out properly for your batting.

Batting is one of the most exciting components of a cricket match. One way of perfecting your batting is through playing each ball according to its merit. It is not possible every time for a bowler to ball six good balls in an over and also it is very rare that you will receive six bad balls in an over. Remember it takes only one good ball to get you out. So watch each and every ball very carefully and watch out for balls that may prove for your undoing. Watch out for that ball.

Keep watching the ball in the bowlers hand till the ball is delivered. If you follow this meticulously you can very easily find out what type of ball the bowler is going to deliver. If you do this then you can be prepared in advance to face the type of ball being bowled to you and then adjust your footwork and shots accordingly. Always remember to follow cricket batting tips if you want to be a successful batsman.

rugby training equipment, cricket equipment, cricket balls

Many people have never seen a cricket ball, so it is not surprising that most haven’t the slightest idea what they look like, how they’re made, things like that. This article will help fill in some of the blanks about this particular piece of cricket equipment, by answering the simplest of questions people might consider most interesting.

What are cricket balls made of?

At its core, they’re made from cork, which of course comes from a specific type of Oak tree. Much like an American baseball, balls are wound tightly around their circumference with string to a certain diameter, which in the men’s sporting events is between 224 and 229 millimeters. The balls must also weigh between 155.9 and 163.0 grams.

These wound cores are then covered with four crescent-shapes strips of tanned leather which are sewn together at a seam along the ball’s middle. The balls are traditionally dyed red, except for one-day matches where night play makes a white ball more visible under the lights. Cricket balls are designed to last for at least 80 over, the equivalent of over 5 hours of play. Balls are only replaced during play under specific conditions according to league rules.

These balls can be machine or hand-made, in either two or four pieces, though much of the wool yarn and cork comes from central locations like Portugal and Australia. Kookaburra, Slazenger, and Gray-Nicolls are major distributors of tournament-quality balls.

What is the “swing” of a ball referring to?

The unique construction and density of a cricket ball, in combination with a bowler’s variety of delivery, the speed at which they throw, and the age of the ball in play determine a ball’s “swing,” i.e. its horizontal deviation from side to side after it leaves a bowler’s hand.

All these variables contribute something similar to, but yet different from, the curve of a baseball when released by a pitcher. For a better understanding of the difference between the two, you can consult a scientific discussion of the Magnus Effect online. Bowlers use the seams on a cricket ball to create “spin” on deliveries.

Is there a difference between hand-made and machine-made balls?

At least one study completed in November 2008 suggests that all balls are not made alike, a factor that contributes to inconsistency in play. Softer balls that are more forgiving can be placed more easily by batters. More runs are possible as these balls break down over a few hours, enough time for a significant amount of runs to be scored by less skilled players.

The use of different core materials (rubber and cork, or a mixture of the two, for example) and different specifications for the surface finishes and yarn highlights the need for better standards. The official committees of ICC tournament play will need a closer look, as tampering and inferior quality are still issues that occasionally become a focal point for cricket balls.
